Maguey Tobalá in the district of Ejutla, Oaxaca.

Maguey Tobala, scientifically known as Agaves potatorum, is a perennial plant characterized by its solitary growth and compact form, with a height of 30 to 50 cm and a diameter of 40 to 60 cm. The rosettes of 30 to 60 succulent leaves per plant, varying in length from 15 to 35 cm and in width from 5 to 10 cm, reflect a diversity of shapes ranging from ovate to lanceolate. These leaves, ranging in shades from glaucous to glaucous green, have sinuate to crenulate margins and are adorned with characteristic teeth measuring 4 to 12 mm in length, giving the plant an imposing and unique presence in its natural habitat.

The flowering of Maguey Tobala is a spectacle in itself, with an inflorescence that reaches heights of 3 to 6 meters, where the fertile portion is located in the middle or upper third, presenting a paniculate and open appearance. The primary branches of the inflorescence, which vary in length from 10 to 30 cm, are distributed along the inflorescence, showing a complex floral architecture. The plant culminates its reproductive cycle with triangular bracts and reddish-brown spines, enhancing the natural elegance that the Tobala Maguey brings to the landscape of the regions where it is found, making this plant a valuable element for both biodiversity and the culture of its surroundings.
